Akash Anand’s Exit: A Turning Point for BSP’s Legacy and Leadership

Mayawati expelled his nephew Akash Anand from party

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), under the leadership of Mayawati, has recently witnessed significant internal upheavals, culminating in the expulsion of her nephew, Akash Anand. This move has raised questions about the party's internal dynamics and its future trajectory.

Akash Anand, armed with an MBA from London, entered the political arena in 2017, quickly ascending the ranks within the BSP. By December 2023, Mayawati had declared him her political successor, entrusting him with significant responsibilities, including the role of National Coordinator. His mandate was to rejuvenate the party by attracting younger demographics and countering emerging Dalit leaders like Chandrashekhar Azad.

Despite his rapid rise, Anand's journey was fraught with challenges. In May 2024, during the Lok Sabha elections, Mayawati removed him from his posts, citing the need for greater political maturity. However, by June 2024, he was reinstated, reflecting the party's oscillating stance on his leadership capabilities.

A pivotal factor in Anand's political trajectory has been his association with his father-in-law, Ashok Siddharth, a long-time BSP loyalist and former Rajya Sabha MP. Siddharth's influence over Anand became a point of contention within the party. Accusations arose that Siddharth was operating a parallel power structure within the BSP, leading to factionalism and weakening the party's organizational strength. This culminated in Siddharth's expulsion from the BSP in February 2025.

Following Siddharth's expulsion, Mayawati expressed concerns about Anand's continued association with him. On March 2, 2025, she removed Anand from all party posts, including that of National Coordinator. The subsequent day, citing his lack of remorse and perceived arrogance in his response, she expelled him from the BSP entirely. Mayawati stated that this decision was in the best interest of the party and its movement.

In reaction to his expulsion, Anand took to social media, expressing unwavering respect for Mayawati's decisions. He emphasized that the Bahujan movement is not merely a career but a lifelong commitment to the self-respect of millions of Dalits and marginalized communities. Anand vowed to continue his fight for these communities, underscoring his dedication to the BSP's foundational principles.

The expulsion of a prominent young leader like Anand has significant implications for the BSP:

With Anand's departure, questions arise about the next generation of leadership within the BSP. Mayawati's assertion that she will not name a successor during her lifetime adds to the uncertainty.
The internal rift, highlighted by the power struggle between factions aligned with Siddharth and other senior leaders, indicates deeper issues within the party's organizational structure.

The BSP's declining performance in recent elections necessitates introspection and strategic realignment. The internal discord could further impact its electoral viability.

The expulsion of Akash Anand marks a critical juncture in the BSP's history. As the party grapples with internal challenges and evolving political landscapes, its ability to uphold its foundational ideals while adapting to contemporary dynamics will determine its future trajectory.
